2013 S&P US Dividend Aristocrats

Questrade Democratic Pricing - 1 cent per share, $4.95 min / $9.95 maxLast week, I shared the list for the Canadian Dividend Aristocrats of 2013 and today, it’s time to share the 2013 S&P US Dividend Aristocrats list.

S&P US Dividend Aristocrats Requirements

The following criteria must be met to become a U.S. Dividend Aristocrat:

  1. Universe: Member of the S&P 500
  2. Financial Viability: Must have increased dividends for 25 consecutive years
  3. Size: Have at least 3B$ in market capitalization
  4. Liquidity: Must have an average trading volume of US$ 5 million in the past 6 months
Here are specifics about the list itself:
  1. Reconstitution: The index is reviewed annually
  2. Stock Diversification: At each review, there must be at least 40 companies
  3. Sector Diversification: No more than 30% of a sector weight in the index
Many of the companies you are going to see have paid dividends for longer the 25 years and some have increased dividends for more than 25 years as well. That’s quite a commitment to shareholders.
Disclaimer: I do own some of the companies listed in the list. See my Dividend Income for my list of holdings.

S&P US Dividend Aristocrats Performance

In 2012, the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats index had a return of 15.66%. Much better than the Canadian Dividend Aristocrats. How did your investment do?

The strength of many of the US Dividend Aristocrats is incredible. After proving they can pay dividend consistently for 25 years, even through the 2008 economic downturn, these companies can really generate income for a portfolio and when effectively re-investing the dividend, you create a major compounding machine!

If you take the time to buy at a good valuation, your can really build a portfolio to generate income for your financial freedom 🙂 It takes time and patience to benefit from the dividend growth over time so it’s important to start early and stay focused.

  1. I just can tell that US portion of my portfolio (about 40%) performed much better than canadian part.
Form US aristocrats I hold bunch of stocks: PG, PEP, ABT (ABBV), MCD, JNJ, KMB, T, MO. also I hold dividend contender COP (and PSX as relust of spin off)… Was watching AFL, had a limit buy , but it didn’t reach my price, so didn’t buy it… for future I don’t think about initiating a new positions, but about buying existing on pullback… so I did last year with ABT, PEP and T

    @gibor
my US stocks have also performed better except for my late purchases in the year. My entire RRSP dividend portfolio is Us at the moment. (The RRSP of my RRSP is indexed through the company plan)
